Wausau, WI October 13, 2026 --(PR.com)-- After nearly four years of writing, recording and producing their debut full-length album, Wausau alternative rock band The Vox Ultima is preparing to release Fathoms + Atoms—an ambitious 12-song record that began in central Wisconsin and made its way to Chicago for the final stages of production.
The album was recorded at Push Sound Studio in Schofield, Wisconsin, before being mixed at Electrical Audio, the legendary Chicago recording studio founded by the late Steve Albini. Albini famously recorded some of the most influential artists in alternative and independent rock, including Nirvana, the Pixies, PJ Harvey, the Breeders, Slint and the Jesus Lizard.
For The Vox Ultima, the journey from Wausau to Chicago is fitting for an album that explores questions that are both deeply personal and impossibly large.
Fathoms + Atoms—a title that evokes the enormous scale of the universe and the microscopic building blocks of everything within it—explores themes of existentialism, nihilism and loss, while also weaving in hope and transcendence.
The Album isn't dead.
Rather than release a series of self-contained singles, The Vox Ultima felt compelled to write and self-produce an entire album.
Orlando diValentin, front man, vocalist and lyricist for The Vox stated, “The writing process for this album was meta in the sense that I let the words spill out and the theme of the album kind of formed itself.”
"We knew we couldn’t express everything we wanted to express by recording one single or even an EP,” said guitarist Brian Kalish. “We had to push it all the way. There's an arc to the album. The songs are connected sonically, lyrically and thematically. We spent years putting this together. Fathoms + Atoms is more or less tying a bow on the first chapter of the band. It honors where we came from, but also provides a glimpse into where the band is heading.”
The commitment to the album format also extends to how Fathoms + Atoms will reach listeners. It will be available to fans in a physical format—but one fans are probably not expecting.
“We wanted to bridge the gap between owning a physical copy of the album, but also having it easily accessible on your phone,” Kalish said. “We think we’ve accomplished that in a unique and meaningful way. People in attendance at the album release show on October 24 will be the first to get a look at what we’ve cooked up. It’s pretty exciting. Early reaction to it has been very positive.”
From Wausau to Chicago and Back Home
The album represents over three years of work by The Vox Ultima, which was formed in 2022.
Kalish and Orlando DiValentin are founding members. Drummer Dustin Hauke joined in the summer of 2025.
“Finding the right band members with an open mind was key,” diValentin said. “Each of us felt like the odd man out in previous projects. Somehow when the three of us got together, everything just clicked.”
The band chose to work with Electrical Audio for mixing, connecting a locally produced record with one of the most influential recording environments in American independent rock.
“We had conversations with several mixing engineers across the country, including people who had worked with Paramore, Radiohead, REM, Beck and Deafheaven,” Kalish said. “In the end, we felt Electrical was the right fit. Mixing it was a really cool experience. I mean, just being in that studio and knowing all the amazing bands that have recorded there… It was special.”
The Vox Ultima’s influences span decades and genres, counting Modest Mouse, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Liars, and Blood Brothers among their influences. The resulting album combines atmospheric passages and layered guitars with heavier, high-gain rock and an emphasis on dynamics and intricate songwriting.
The Vox Ultima will celebrate the release of Fathoms + Atoms with a live album release show on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Coral Lanes in Rothschild, Wisconsin.
